Getting to and Travelling Around

Getting Around

The Maldives is connected to international destinations through Velana International Airport near Male. Inter-island travel is possible by speedboat, domestic flight, seaplane and public ferry. Resorts commonly arrange speedboat or seaplane transfers, while ferries offer economical connections between selected inhabited islands. Arrange transfers in advance because schedules depend on location, weather and resort accessibility.

Best Time and Weather

When to Visit

The Maldives has a warm tropical climate year-round, with temperatures generally between 25°C and 31°C. November to April is usually the best time for sunnier weather, calmer seas, beaches, snorkelling and diving. The southwest monsoon from around May to October brings more rain, humidity and occasional rough seas, but can also offer lower resort rates and certain marine wildlife experiences.

Travel insurance is recommended, especially for diving and water sports. Use sun protection and follow marine safety advice.

Cards are widely accepted at resorts; US dollars are commonly accepted in tourism. Local currency is useful on inhabited islands.
