Getting to and Travelling Around

Getting Around

Sri Lanka is well connected through Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo, its main international gateway. Domestic travel is convenient through trains, public buses, private taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles. Scenic railway journeys through Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella offer views of tea plantations and mountains. Tuk-tuks and taxis are available for short journeys, while private transfers and organised tours provide comfortable options for exploring the island.

Best Time and Weather

When to Visit

Sri Lanka experiences a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. December to March is generally ideal for the western and southern coasts and much of the central hill country, while May to September is often suitable for the eastern coast. The southwest monsoon affects western and southwestern regions, while the northeast monsoon brings rainfall to northern and eastern areas. Ella and Nuwara Eliya are cooler than coastal destinations.
